THE IMPORTANCE OF HEADSHOTS

I was recently interviewed by a colleague, Sarah Goldman, of Sarah Goldman Photography to discuss the importance of having a professional headshot. Because everyone is on-line, business imagery is key to helping attract your ideal client. To see the full article, https://www.sarahgoldmanphoto.com/Importance-of-Headshots

I have had an extremely fulfilling career for the past 20 years as a portrait photographer.   From high school seniors, to corporate headshots, to family portraits, I have become friends with many of my clients and been priviledged to capture many sessions for them. It is almost like becoming a member of their family, as you recall how their loved ones have grown and matured.  And, in some cases, people wanted copies of their portraits (later in life) because they felt that my portraits “were the best we ever had.” It is a great feeling to know that you have brought joy to someone.

Being a portrait photographer has helped me work with some incredible publications.  I have photographed over 120 covers for various magazines, including interior and marketing images. I love being “out and about” covering the latest happenings in town!

It is important to have an updated headshot each year that promotes your image.  For some, a corporate and structured image promotes knowledge and professionalism. This is the type I create frequently for medical and financial professionals.

For others, a more casual and approachable image may be best.  This type is great for high energy professionals that want dynamic and impactful imagery.

Any business that is using a website, social media, and marketing campaigns should use professional photography to make a strong impression. These days, that is everyone! And when you only have 3 seconds to attract and hold someone’s attention on social media, your on-line presence needs to be captivating.
To prepare for a session, I offer personal branding and make sure that their images enhance that message. Having a consultation in advance will help them plan and coordinate their clothing. Discussing a client’s needs also determine whether a studio background or environmental setting would be best. Every session is designed around my client and how to help their business imagery put their best foot forward. Portrait sessions are not cookie cutter, but rather, specifically created to help you attract your target market. That is the fun part of what I do!!  We work together to determine what type of image is best for you.

A portrait photographer should know how to enhance a client’s features, and not detract.  Whether you use short, broad, or flat lighting, you should understand these patterns and know what is best for your client.  Also understanding feminine and masculine posing is important. I have, too often, seen men put in feminine poses that detracts from them.  In addition, I have seen people put in unnatural locations, such as a man wearing a suit standing under a pier at the beach.  Also, I have seen some overuse retouching to the point of a client looking fake and plasticy. Retouching is an art and it should not go beyond a certain point.  Portrait retouching should make your client look rested and as if they have just been on vacation…in other words, they should look really, really good!

In all, a professional photographer can help you promote your business with appropriate and dynamic images. Because we are all online, make sure that yours sets the right tone.
